Arbutus and Maple Box
This piece is a small thank-you gift for friends who have often invited us to their Mayne Island cottage.
I saw this design many years ago and was immediately taken by the juxtaposition of, and tension between, the contorted natural log and the regular and highly-exposed man-made box.
I stole the arbutus base from their woodpile – and saved it from their fire place! – and I scavenged the maple box from my bin of project off-cuts.The slot was cut by suspending the log upside-down over the table saw and making repeated passes.
